Can Obesity Lead to Diabetes?

As recently reported in Newsweek Magazine, there is such a strong correlation between obesity and type 2 diabetes, that a new term has been coined, Diabesity.

Link Between Diabetes and Obesity

As people gain weight, the fat cells in the body grow and turn out increased amounts of inflammatory compounds. Inflammation can actually cause insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is the precursor to diabetes. There is not a complete understanding of why inflammation causes insulin resistance at this time. However the evidence supporting obesity as a cause of diabetes is very compelling.

Diabesity the Epidemic

Many people feel that the current rate of obesity in the United States will lead to a dramatic increase in diabetes over the next decade. There are currently 18-20 million people in the Untied States that are diabetic, with an estimated 5 million currently undiagnosed. There are many who feel that at the current pace of obesity incidence, the number of diabetics could potentially grow into the hundred of millions over the next couple of decades.

Diabetes and Obesity Prevention

The easiest way to avoid diabesity is to make some simple lifestyle changes. The first step in prevention is to begin eating a healthy, well-balanced diet. The diet should be low in fat, and high in vitamin and minerals. Choose lean meats for protein, whole grains, and lots of fruits and vegetables. Work with your doctor or nutritionist to design a diet that promotes weight control.

The second step to preventing diabetes is to engage in daily exercise. It is usually recommended that 30-60 minutes of cardiovascular activity be done 3-4 times per week. If you are currently not exercising, it will be imperative that you consult your doctor prior to starting any new program.

Prevention and Overall Health

There are so many benefits to participating in daily exercise and eating a health diet. Not only does obesity lead to diabetes, it leads to many other diseases as well. Heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and several other diseases can be caused by obesity. If you feel you are at risk for diabetes, or just feel like you want to lead a healthier lifestyle, make the commitment to make some changes in your diet and become more active. As always, it is imperative to get your doctors permission prior to staring any new exercise program.
