Metaglip is the brand name for the generic drugs: Glipizide and Metformin. Both of these drugs are used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Metaglip is indicated for glycemic control when a patient is not able to control their blood sugar levels through diet and exercise. Metaglip is not intended to be a substitute for diet and exercise. It is intended to be an additional part of an overall diabetes treatment plan.

Metformin

Metformin is used to control blood sugar levels and works in three ways. The first way Metformin works is to reduce the amount of glucose that is produced by the liver. Second, Metformin reduces the amount of sugar absorbed from food through the stomach. Last, Metformin increases the efficiency of the insulin being produced by the body. Metformin is indicated as an adjunct /addition to diet and exercise.

Glipizide is in the class of drugs called sulfonylureas. Glipizide is also used to control blood sugar levels by stimulating the pancreas to release insulin into the blood. Glipizide is indicated as an additional part of an overall diabetes treatment plan, consisting of diet and exercise.

Metaglip Dosing

Metaglip is a medicine that must be prescribed by a health care professional. Metaglip should always be taken according to your doctor's specific dosing recommendations. It is important to continue to follow the overall diabetes treatment plan your doctor has recommended. If your doctor has recommended you follow a specific diet plan along with a daily exercise regimen, it is important to continue following both.


Insurance Coverage for Metaglip

Metaglip is a diabetes medicine available only through a prescription from the doctor treating you for diabetes. As with all your diabetes supplies and medicines, your insurance plan will usually cover a certain portion of the overall cost. It is important to check with your insurance to determine in advance how much out of pocket expense your diabetes supplies and medicines will cost you. Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, have a co-payment that is usually around 20%. The co-pay of a drug will vary by plan and by drug.
